It’s time to learn about “vishing,” fraudulent schemes carried out using Internet-based telephone services.

Using the voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, fraudsters can mask identifying information that would otherwise appear on the recipient’s telephone caller ID service. In such scams, the callers hold themselves out to be representatives of legitimate businesses in an effort to fool consumers into providing their account and personal identification information.

Vishers also use e-mail. That e-mail, instead of providing recipients a Web site address where consumers are directed to verify information, provides a phone number to an automated answering service that asks for account information.

You will never receive an email or phone call from VFCU and any of our partners requesting private and personal information about you or your financial accounts.  Please be aware that if you receive any emails requesting this type of information, that those emails are fraudulent and you should just delete them from your computer.

A current example of one of these emails is for a company called NAFCU.  The email looks like it is coming from this credit union affiliated company.  It is worded like this:

Dear National Association Federal Credit Unions valued member,

The security of your information, transactions, and money is the core of our business and our top priority at National Association Federal Credit Unions.  Our policy is to protect personal or financial information which comes into our possession during the normal course of business.  It has come to our attention that your account information needs to be updated due to inactive members, frauds and spoof reports.  If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and renew your records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.  However, failure to update your records will result in account erasure.  This notification expires on August 05, 2006.

This would be followed by links for you to click on and fill in your personal information.  The email is worded to scare you and puts a deadline on it to encourage you to immediately fill out their forms.  Do not click on the links listed in the email.

If you are unsure about any email you receive, please call the institution listed on the email or go, on your own, to that company's website.  VFCU staff can be reached at (210) 345-2222 or (888) 272-8228.
